Abstract

Further embracing the opportunity to contrast fiction with reality as well as add her own perspective, Bower introduced two human dimensions not included in the Colorado River Compact negotiations: race and gender.[22] These matter in part because the Compact has been criticized for excluding Native Americans and also because Bower provided a unique lens on inclusivity in river matters. Though the sentence prior to this addresses Starr of the Desert and how Bower built that novel around a real scheme to return border states to Mexico, any recognition of TheEagle's Wing relating to the Colorado River Compact is neglected. Contextualizing this otherwise obscure novel with primary sources conveying the history of the Colorado River Compact - especially documents of originator Delph Carpenter - reveals how perceptively Bower commented on contemporary river issues.
