Abstract

This article focuses on the career and pianism of Australian composer and pianist Percy Grainger, emphasizing his significant recorded legacy. Although Grainger preferred to be remembered primarily as a composer, his pianistic skill—characterized by a distinctive tone, transparent voicing, and expressive phrasing—is preserved in numerous recordings spanning from 1908 to the mid-20th century. His recordings include pioneering electrical recordings of major works such as Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 3 and innovative use of piano rolls for concertos by Grieg and Tchaikovsky. Despite some gaps, such as the absence of Beethoven in his recorded repertoire and limited concerto recordings, Grainger's discography offers valuable insight into his unique artistry and unconventional approach to music-making.
