Abstract

The article "Imagining a Northern Kansas" delves into Eli Thayer's campaign to encourage migration to Kansas in order to counter the spread of slavery. Thayer, in collaboration with the New England Emigrant Aid Company, sought to create settlements in Kansas that would sway elections and secure the territory as a free state. Despite facing challenges and falling short of some objectives, the NEEAC managed to send settlers to Kansas who played significant roles in shaping the territory's future. This initiative sparked discussions on gradualism and sectional tensions that were pivotal in the lead-up to the Civil War. [Extracted from the article]
