Abstract
The article discusses how online misinformation fueled anti-migrant riots in the UK. The riots, which targeted immigrants, occurred in various English towns and cities as well as Northern Ireland. Far-right groups were involved in looting, attacking police and locals, and vandalizing mosques. The violence was sparked by false reports that a triple murder was committed by a Muslim immigrant. The article highlights the role of social media in amplifying disinformation and the need for social media platforms to police hate speech. The UK government has introduced protections under the Online Safety Act, but there is tension between elected governments and privately controlled platforms. The article also mentions the anxieties about migration in the UK and the positive overall view of immigration among the British people. Peaceful anti-racist counter-protests took place in response to the far-right gatherings. [Extracted from the article]
