Abstract

The article discusses the Salem witch trials of 1692 and explores the factors that fueled the trials, including fear, fanaticism and vengeance. It describes how the harsh living conditions, strict religious beliefs and social tensions of the time contributed to the outbreak of accusations of witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts; role of confessions & pressure placed on the accused during the trials; and understanding of the historical context and psychological factors behind the events in Salem.
