Abstract

The article reports on a magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck off Japan's northeast coast, triggering a tsunami approximately 80 cm (31 inches) high, with the largest wave hitting Iwate and additional impacts expected in Aomori and Hokkaido. The earthquake, occurring at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), caused shaking as far as Tokyo and led to the suspension of Shinkansen high-speed rail services in Iwate. The Japanese government, led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, has established an emergency response center and urged residents to evacuate to safe, elevated areas. Electric power companies, including Tokyo Electric Power Co., Hokkaido Electric Power Co., and Tohoku Electric Power Co., reported no abnormalities at their nuclear or thermal plants following the quake.
