Abstract

The article examines the rehabilitation of former anti-Bolshevik rebels in the Soviet Union following the civil wars, focusing particularly on the peasant rebels of Tambov. It argues that the Soviet state undertook a systematic effort to reintegrate these individuals into society as part of a broader ideological project, despite the violent suppression of their uprisings. The study highlights the complexities of this rehabilitation process, which included amnesties, the reinstatement of voting rights, and the challenges faced by former rebels in their communities, where they often encountered suspicion and hostility. Ultimately, the article suggests that the Bolsheviks' attempts to transform former enemies into loyal citizens were fraught with contradictions and tensions, reflecting the broader struggles of post-civil war Soviet society.
