Abstract
The article focuses on the historical significance of civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer’s 1964 speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) and its connection to Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 nomination as the first Black and Asian woman to lead a major U.S. political party ticket. Hamer’s activism, including her role in founding the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) and her testimony exposing voter suppression and racial violence, challenged the Democratic Party’s exclusion of Black Americans and highlighted ongoing struggles for voting rights and racial justice. The article underscores that despite progress symbolized by Harris’s candidacy, issues such as state-sanctioned violence and voter suppression persist, emphasizing the continued relevance of Hamer’s fight for an inclusive democracy.
