Abstract

The article delves into the execution of King Charles I of England in 1649 and its depiction in seventeenth-century prints. It examines the deliberate use of black cloth to partially hide the execution, exploring the complex interplay between revealing and concealing the image of the martyred monarch; and mentions the tension between public display and obscured visibility sheds light on the uncertainties and shifting dynamics of power during that period.
