Abstract
Jeffrey Chipps Smith's book, "Albrecht Dürer's Afterlife," explores the posthumous reception of the artist Albrecht Dürer from the time of his death in 1528 to the present day. The book examines how Dürer's image and legacy were shaped by artists, poets, scholars, and politicians. It also discusses the canonization of Dürer through stories and the written word, as well as his visual legacy. The book concludes with Dürer's release from past nationalistic and ideological associations. While the book provides a comprehensive survey of Dürer's afterlives, some chapters could benefit from more contextual information. Overall, the book is a valuable resource for those interested in German history, art history, and Dürer's art and legacy. [Extracted from the article]
