Abstract

The article focuses on Fay A. Yarbrough's book *Choctaw Confederates: The American Civil War in Indian Country*, which examines the Choctaw Nation's involvement in the Civil War. Yarbrough argues that Choctaw support for the Confederacy was driven by a desire to protect Native sovereignty and maintain the institution of chattel slavery, which shaped their social and economic structures. The book analyzes Choctaw political changes, slavery laws, military enlistment, and postwar tensions with freedpeople, highlighting the Choctaw Nation's deep connections to Southern states and challenging the notion of Indian Territory as a peripheral western region. While the work is praised for its thorough research and contribution to Native and Civil War history, some methodological choices, such as cross-cultural gender comparisons, are noted as less convincing.
