Abstract

Paddy O'Connor, the Hartford man- ager, wired Yankees president Ed Barrow, according to Frank Graham's 1942 Gehrig biography, the following message: "Gehrig no use to this ball-club, please recall him." Gehrig debuted at Hartford's Bulkeley Stadium on August 3 to a rousing reception from fans who may not have remembered Lou Lewis from 1921 but had read plenty about Gehrig since. With the blessing of his coach, Andy Coakley, Gehrig and Krichell came to terms and the Yankees would get Gehrig after the 1923 college season ended. Extracted from the article
