Abstract
Laura Wilson's article, "Beyond Tobacco Road: Enriching the Field of Sharecropping Studies," explores the often overlooked topic of sharecroppers in southern literature. The author argues that sharecroppers, who were marginalized and exploited, have not received enough attention in studies of southern literature. The article analyzes various literary works that depict sharecropping and its impact on economic, social, and political issues in the South. It also discusses the historical power dynamics of sharecropping and its influence on modern America. The text examines the portrayal of sharecroppers during the Great Depression, critiques the problematic representation of their voices by certain writers, and explores narratives of sharecropper unionization and the transition from sharecropping to mechanization. Additionally, the article examines modern representations of the plantation and emphasizes the ongoing impact of sharecropping on inequality and injustice in the United States.
