Abstract

Although Marx was disdainful of this attempt to "reconcile the irreconcilable", Mill laughed last: there have been, from his time down to the present, countless theories and propositions, from left to right, to marry liberalism and anti-liberalism. THE CHICAGO BOYS Sebastian Edwards, Professor of International Economics at the University of California and former chief economist for Latin America and the Caribbean at the World Bank, offers a thorough and well-written account of the hits and misses of the Chilean "Chicago Boys", before, during, and after the Pinochet dictatorship. Edwards also points out that the Chicago liberal policies were by no means universally approved by influential members of Pinochet's regime. Nobody paid much attention to the Chicago Boys in the 1960s, let alone during Salvador Allende's presidency, which began in November 1970.[1] Edwards is not sympathetic to the regime of General Augusto Pinochet, who violently deposed Allende's government in September 1973.
