Abstract

This article focuses on a recording of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck’s vocal and organ works performed by Ensemble Weser-Renaissance Bremen under Manfred Cordes, with organist Edoardo Bellotti. Sweelinck (1562–1621), an organist at Amsterdam’s Oude Kerk, composed settings of Calvinist psalms using French poetry by Marot and Beze, as well as Catholic liturgical texts in his Cantiones Sacrae, though these pieces were not performed in his church due to Calvinist restrictions on organ use in worship. The vocal performances are noted for their rich blend and homorhythmic clarity, while the organ variations reflect Sweelinck’s engagement with contemporary English virginal styles. The recording includes detailed liner notes in German and English that provide historical context and text translations. [Extracted from the article]
