Abstract
The article reviews recent early music vocal recordings, highlighting diverse performance styles. It discusses Ensemble Gilles Binchois’s energetic and resonant rendition of Charles D’Argentil’s Missa pro Defunctis, the ethereal and restrained approach of the Huelgas Ensemble in Blasius Amon’s Missa Quatuor Vocum pro Defunctus, and Graindelavoix’s individualistic and ornamented polyphony in Ex Nihilo. Additionally, it covers Alamire’s elegant interpretation of William Byrd’s Great Service and the re-release of I Fagiolini’s 1612 Italian Vespers, noted for their majestic sound. The review concludes with Ensemble Correspondances’ performance of André Campra’s Messe de Requiem and related works, evoking the sacred music traditions of Notre-Dame in the late 17th century.
