Abstract

The article focuses on the life, political career, and legacy of Harvey Milk, San Francisco's first openly gay elected official, who played a pivotal role in advancing LGBTQ+ rights in the 1970s. Milk championed anti-discrimination legislation, notably opposing California's Proposition 6 (the Briggs Initiative), which sought to ban gay and lesbian individuals from working in schools. His assassination in 1978 by fellow supervisor Dan White, who was later convicted of voluntary manslaughter, sparked the White Night Riots, reflecting tensions between the LGBTQ+ community and law enforcement. Milk's legacy endures through ongoing activism, commemorations such as Harvey Milk Day, and the work of the Harvey Milk Foundation. The article also situates Milk within a broader context of LGBTQ+ political trailblazers in the United States and beyond.
