Abstract

This article focuses on the reign of Xerxes I, king of the Persian Empire from 486 to 465 BCE, highlighting his consolidation of power, suppression of revolts, and military campaigns, particularly his invasion of Greece. Despite his defeat by Greek forces at battles such as Salamis and Plataea, Xerxes maintained control over a vast empire stretching from India to Egypt and Europe, successfully quelling uprisings in Egypt and Babylon. He completed significant architectural projects at Persepolis and Susa, reinforcing imperial authority and continuity. Xerxes was assassinated in 465 BCE amid internal court intrigues, but his empire remained stable and influential in the region for decades afterward. The article also notes possible connections between Xerxes and the biblical figure Ahasuerus, reflecting his cultural and historical significance beyond Persian sources.
