Abstract
The article focuses on how white Louisianans resisted Reconstruction after the American Civil War by seeking to preserve white supremacy despite military defeat. Topics include the ideological continuity of Confederate beliefs, the use of both violence and political strategy to undermine Reconstruction, and the broader national tensions between biracial democracy and the restoration of a racially hierarchical social order.
