Abstract

"The Girl Who Dared to Defy: Jane Street and the Rebel Maids of Denver" is a biography by Jane Little Botkin that focuses on the life of Jane Street, a union organizer and rebel maid in Denver during the early 20th century. Street's efforts to organize domestic workers challenged the power of elite women and employment agencies, and she successfully improved wages and working conditions for maids. However, her success was undermined by a group of male members of the International Workers of the World (IWW) who saw her as a threat. The biography contributes to the historiography of women labor organizers and provides insight into labor history and the history of American women. [Extracted from the article]
