Abstract

The article focuses on the May 2025 ban of Bangladesh's Awami League (AL) by the interim government under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) of 2009, marking a significant escalation in the country's political instability. The ban follows the July 2024 student-led protests and a deadly government crackdown, with AL leaders facing trials for crimes against humanity and genocide. The move has deepened political divisions, with rival parties like Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and right-wing groups supporting the ban, while the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has responded cautiously. Historically, political bans in Bangladesh have failed to ensure stability, often strengthening banned parties' resolve and pushing them underground. The ban also creates an ideological vacuum previously held by AL's secular Bengali nationalism, potentially reshaping the nation's political landscape amid ongoing challenges to justice and democratic processes.
