Abstract

This article examines the impact of perceived discrimination on the financial stability and psychological stress of first-generation immigrants in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using cross-sectional data from 222 foreign-born adults collected in 2021, the study found that higher levels of everyday discrimination and increased discrimination since the pandemic's onset were significantly associated with lower financial stability and greater psychological stress, even after controlling for sociodemographic and immigration-related factors. Additional findings indicated that longer residence in the U.S. and marital status were linked to better financial outcomes, while visa category and gender influenced stress levels. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions and policies that address the intersectional challenges immigrants face, particularly discrimination, to improve their economic and mental well-being during and beyond the pandemic.
