Abstract

The article critiques the 1895 war novel "The Red Badge of Courage," by American author Stephen Crane. Topics discussed include the motifs of enchantment and concepts of magic and supernatural incorporated by Crane in his American Civil War-focused narrative, the aspects of literary naturalism which may be observed in the novel, and Crane's characterization of a Union Army soldier named Henry Fleming.
