Abstract

The article focuses on the 1955 murder of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old Black boy brutally killed in Mississippi, and its profound impact on America's racial consciousness and the civil rights movement. It details the events leading to Till’s abduction and murder by Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, the biased trial that acquitted them, and the role of local authorities in obstructing justice. The open-casket funeral held by Till’s mother, Mamie Till Bradley, and the publication of graphic photos in African American media galvanized national outrage and activism. The article also addresses ongoing efforts to preserve the true history of the case amid attempts to erase or distort it, highlighting the establishment of the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument in 2023 as a step toward remembrance and justice.
