Abstract

The article discusses the relationship between Austrian poet Ingeborg Bachmann and Swiss novelist and playwright Max Frisch, who were considered one of the most prominent couples in German literature from 1958 to 1962. Both writers were known for their contributions to addressing the political upheavals of the 20th century and the challenges of love. The publication of their correspondence in 2022 sheds light on their complex relationship and its influence on their literary works. The article also highlights the tendency to focus on Bachmann's personal relationships in biographical studies, rather than her artistic achievements. The letters reveal the struggles the couple faced in balancing their artistic pursuits and their desire for a conventional family life. The relationship ultimately ended when Frisch met another woman, but the correspondence continued, reflecting both the emotional wounds and self-assurance of Bachmann. The letters provide insight into the love between two writers and the challenges they faced in living together. The article also explores the genre of the love letter and its significance in the context of Bachmann and Frisch's relationship. [Extracted from the article]
