Abstract
The article focuses on the historical plausibility of King Alfred the Great sending emissaries to India in the ninth century to deliver alms and visit the shrine of St Thomas. Topics include the Anglo-Saxon sources and traditions supporting the mission, the presence of early Christian communities and St Thomas' cult in India, and the symbolic significance of sending gifts to the furthest known Christian lands from England.
