Abstract

The article focuses on American visual artist Senga Nengudi's 1978 project "Ceremony for Freeway Fets", reimagines the urban landscape of Los Angeles, California, by engaging with city's geography from a perspective of the marginalized bodies within it. Topics include the use of public space & African cultural references in Nengudi's art; role of urban development and displacement in 1970s and the political commentary embedded in the notion of "fetishes" in relation to colonialism & capitalism.
