Abstract
The article focuses on the experiences of African American nurses who served at Tuskegee Army Airfield (TAAF) during World War II, as documented in a book by Pia Marie Winters Jordan. It highlights the limited acceptance of black nurses into the Army Nurse Corps (ANC) despite their qualifications, their diverse duties including medical and psychiatric care, and the social life at the base, which included visits from prominent Black celebrities and recreational activities. The article also addresses incidents of racial discrimination faced by these nurses in the segregated South, including a detailed account of one nurse's violent encounter with local authorities. Jordan's work combines historical research and personal narratives to illuminate this often overlooked aspect of African American military history.
