Abstract

The article focuses on economic growth as an evolutionary process driven by variation and selection within market dynamics, emphasizing innovation as the creation of economic novelties that must demonstrate competitive advantage and attract investment to impact economic development. It explains that economic evolution involves uneven growth and decline across industries and regions, shaped by competitive rivalry and market mechanisms that evaluate and transmit information about innovations. The statistical nature of this evolution is described through changes in the relative fitness and population weights of economic entities, illustrating how structural economic transformation occurs over time. Finally, the article highlights the significant role of public policy in regulating markets, directing innovation, and addressing the social and spatial consequences of economic change, noting the challenges in balancing economic capital mobility with the more place-dependent human and social capital.
