Abstract

This article focuses on a 4-CD set of Chopin piano recitals performed by Turkish pianist Idil Biret at the Schwetzingen Festival in 1999, supplemented by earlier recordings of Chopin’s Impromptus from 1984. The recordings, made by German South West Radio, capture Biret’s ability to perform a full recital program on short notice, drawing on her extensive prior work recording Chopin’s complete piano works for Naxos. While earlier reviews of her Naxos recordings were mixed, this set is noted for its warm sound quality and nuanced, expressive playing, particularly in the mazurkas, polonaises, and sonatas. The accompanying booklet includes background on the recitals, program notes, and references to German critic Joachim Kaiser, who admired Biret. Overall, the recordings present Biret as a skilled and individual interpreter of Chopin’s music. [Extracted from the article]
