Abstract
The article discusses Catholics in Britain and Ireland celebrated the final removal of most of the legal penalties and statutory discrimination against them in 1829. It mentions persecution of Catholics in early modern England was, at times, intense, producing such horrific incidents as the pressing to death of the pregnant Margaret Clitherow, a York woman who refused to testify when accused of harbouring priests.
