Abstract

The article examines the nature of leadership, challenging the conventional emphasis on a fixed set of “essential competencies” such as empathy and charisma. It argues that the defining feature of leadership is the ability to inspire followers by shaping their expectations of a better future, rather than embodying a universal skill set. However, attracting followers does not guarantee organizational success; effectiveness depends on cultivating "team intelligence," which involves aligning reasoning, managing attention, and leveraging resources within groups. The article concludes that leaders should focus on their unique strengths to inspire followership while simultaneously fostering team intelligence to translate that followership into meaningful results across sectors.
