Abstract

As the authors demonstrated, the press in Australia and New Zealand - the two dominions most closely linked to Great Britain politically - generally criticized Sinn Féin irreconcilables for their rejection of the very generous terms granted in the Treaty. I Birth of a State i concludes with an article-by-article analysis of the Treaty and an assessment of its long-term political consequences. Combined with this, the book adds some detailed forensic and detailed analysis of the TDs, the Treaty debates, and Commonwealth opinion. [Extracted from the article]
