Abstract
The article examines the role of the concepts of tyranny and despotism in 18th-century republican political thought, highlighting their use to challenge the legitimacy of monarchy and aristocratic hierarchies. It emphasizes how Mary Wollstonecraft, in her work *A Vindication of the Rights of Woman*, criticizes men who advocate for freedom while maintaining a tyrannical dominance over women in the domestic sphere. Wollstonecraft draws a parallel between the tyranny exercised by monarchs and that imposed by men in the household, arguing that this oppression is a form of despotism that must be denounced. The article also explores the implications of these ideas for the condition of women and their exclusion from political rights, while underscoring the necessity of egalitarian education to promote their emancipation.
