Abstract

This article reviews a book examining the influence of Magna Carta, originally issued in 1215, on Irish legal and constitutional history from the medieval period to the present. The book notably explores Magna Carta Hiberniae, Ireland’s own charter issued in 1217, and its role in shaping fundamental rights, criminal law, and constitutional developments including the Irish Free State and the 1937 Bunreacht na hÉireann (Constitution of Ireland). Contributions analyze key historical figures, legal documents like the Red Book, and movements such as the Chartists, highlighting the charter’s enduring impact on Irish sovereignty, human rights, and legal culture. The work situates Magna Carta’s principles within broader international constitutionalism and underscores their continued relevance amid contemporary challenges to legal and political systems.
