Abstract

The article examines how the rivalry between "Commonweal" magazine and "Tablet," a diocesan newspaper with a national, right-wing audience and supported by radio preacher Father Charles Coughlin, prefigures the present day Catholic media wars. Topics discussed include the positive neutrality adopted by "Commonweal" on the Spanish Civil War and the responsibility of "Commonweal," "Tablet" and Coughlin in the arrest of law school graduate John F. Cassidy and other men on seditious conspiracy.
