Abstract

This article reviews English Touring Opera’s spring tour featuring Rossini’s *Il viaggio a Reims* and Donizetti’s *Lucrezia Borgia*, both performed in Italian. *Il viaggio a Reims* is praised for its inventive staging, lively period-instrument orchestra led by Jonathan Peter Kenny, and its thematic focus on international unity, despite the opera’s technical challenges and occasional slow pacing. In contrast, *Lucrezia Borgia* is described as a melodramatic exploration of redemption and familial tension, with a competent but less dynamic musical and vocal performance, and a more restrained production style. Both operas tour alongside a revival of Handel’s *Giulio Cesare* until late May.
