Abstract

This article examines factors influencing career goals and attainment among pharmacy learners in the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) community in the United States. Through two focus groups conducted in 2021-2022, participants identified self-efficacy, mentorship, and exposure to diverse professionals as key motivators, while financial barriers, lack of representation, and insufficient support were major obstacles. The study suggests that educational institutions and healthcare organizations can better support BIPOC learners by fostering genuine mentoring relationships, increasing BIPOC representation, providing financial assistance, enhancing professional development access, and embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives throughout their culture and leadership. These findings highlight the importance of systemic and culturally responsive strategies to promote career advancement for BIPOC pharmacy learners.
