Abstract
The article focuses on the contested reception of Swiss theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar in American Catholicism, showing how the Catholic right selectively interprets his work to justify cultural and liturgical fortification. It contrasts Balthasar's call to renew the Gospel from its foundations with contemporary efforts to defend the Church through outward signs of difference.
