Abstract

The article analyzes the parallel of the poem "The Devil of the Vault; or the Unmasking of Murder" with John Hanson's "Time Is a Turn-coat; or England's Three-fold Metamorphosis." It suggests a verbal overlap between the two poems such as the use of the words death and leane-faced, the phrases chaps of hell and decocted blood, and passages deaths black stage and deaths dismall stage. It discusses the tendency of both poems to deploy obscure and latinate vocabulary such as discute and immane.
