Abstract

This article focuses on the Figueroa family of Indiana Harbor, East Chicago, Indiana, who were pioneers in preserving and publishing Indiana's Latino history through Spanish-language newspapers. Established in the 1920s by brothers Benjamin and Francisco (Frank) Figueroa, Figueroa Printers produced two key publications: *El Amigo del Hogar* (1925–early 1930s) and the *Latin Times* (1956–late 20th century), which documented cultural, social, and political life of the Latino community. The family was deeply involved in community activism, including participation in the Catholic mutual-aid society Circulo de Obreros Catolico and support for local arts, education, and political mobilization. The *Latin Times* notably chronicled urban renewal impacts and Latino political engagement, culminating in the election of the state's first Latino city councilman in 1967. Frank Figueroa Sr.'s legacy in journalism and community leadership was recognized posthumously with his 2024 induction into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame.
