Abstract
According to a report from the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, 2023 was the hottest year on record, with average surface temperatures rising nearly 0.2°C above the previous record set in 2016. The spike in temperatures was unexpected and cannot be solely attributed to the burning of fossil fuels. Factors such as the end of a La Niña climate pattern and a decrease in light-blocking pollution may have contributed to the record-breaking temperatures. However, the exact cause of the spike remains a mystery. Despite uncertainties about future projections, the long-term warming trend is expected to continue until fossil fuel burning is halted.
