Abstract

The article reviews the 2025 film adaptation of *Kiss of the Spider Woman*, directed by Bill Condon and based on the stage musical adapted from Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel. Set in an Argentine political prison during the military dictatorship, the story centers on Luis Molina, a queer prisoner, who helps his Marxist cellmate Valentin escape their harsh reality through retellings of a glamorous Hollywood musical starring Ingrid Luna, played by Jennifer Lopez. While the film highlights Lopez’s star presence and visually references 1950s MGM musicals, critics note that the musical numbers and the central relationship between Molina and Valentin lack emotional depth and chemistry. The adaptation also softens the original’s political context, resulting in a less nuanced portrayal of the characters’ revolutionary motivations and the story’s core themes of dignity and liberation.
