Abstract
This essay recounts the life and work of Caribbean American choreographer-anthropologist-social activist Pearl Primus, focusing on her dance creation "Michael Row the Boar Ashore." Topics discussed are creative history of Primus, her significance to American dance and cultural-political history, expressive possibilities Primus offers to the figure of the African American mother consumed by torment in the aftermath of the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.
