Abstract
Norway is taking steps to secure an exemption from broad protective tariffs imposed by the European Union in response to the US trade war initiated by President Donald Trump. The country is expediting the approval of EU laws to strengthen its negotiating position and avoid paying tariffs to sell goods in the EU, its primary trading partner. Norway's government hopes to receive a written exemption from the EU to bypass World Trade Organization rules, as was the case in 2018 when Norway was excluded from EU levies on steel imports. The EU is expected to spare Norway from any safeguard measures and retaliatory tariffs, as it aims to protect allies like Switzerland and Norway from protectionist actions. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store expressed concerns about the potential impact of the trade war on the 600,000 jobs in Norway linked to exports, emphasizing the importance of maintaining access to the European market through the European Economic Agreement.
