Abstract

This article focuses on Doug McMillon's reflections as he steps down after nearly 12 years as CEO of Walmart, the world's largest company by revenue. McMillon discusses his decision to hand over leadership to John Furner, highlighting Furner's strengths in technology and people management, and emphasizes Walmart's ongoing transformation into a digitally powered, purpose-driven retailer. He addresses Walmart's evolving purpose beyond low prices to include sustainability, community support, and healthcare, as well as the company's strategic investments in wages, education, and e-commerce that temporarily reduced profitability but positioned Walmart for future growth. McMillon also shares insights on leading through uncertainty, the impact of AI on jobs, and advice for CEOs managing major organizational change.
