Abstract

In the fourth section of the book, "Liberation and reorganization", Lim explains how SMR was dismantled after the war and assesses how much postwar China relied on SMR technology and systems after gaining control of the railway. The concluding chapter, "SMR's place in East Asian railway history", places SMR at the terminus of Japan's railway empire and recaps Lim's arguments on SMR's railway system formation process. In this ambitious book, he takes on explaining the railway management of the South Manchuria Railway (SMR), the sprawling enterprise at the centre of East Asian railway history.
