Abstract
The article "Under Household Government: Sex and Family in Puritan Massachusetts" by M. Michelle Jarrett Morris explores the role of sex and sexuality in Puritan society in Massachusetts from 1660 to 1700. The author challenges stereotypes of Puritans and investigates the ways in which families sought to protect their own when they transgressed societal norms. The book draws on over five hundred cases related to sexual crimes, highlighting the experiences of servants and enslaved individuals who often faced harsher punishments. The author also examines the complexities of kinship networks and the influence of race, sex, and class on the outcomes of sexual crime cases. The article sheds light on the vulnerability of working women and the difficulties they faced in seeking justice. The author's methodology and contextualization of authority in colonial power structures are also praised. [Extracted from the article]
