Abstract
The article examines poet John Milton's prose "Areopagitica" and its relevance to the debate over press freedom that gained urgency throughout the eighteenth century. Topics discussed include developments that instigated a change in the way that Milton was viewed in England, reason the prose was republished as an independent, 58-page octavo in 1738, and effects of the Licensing Act on British drama.
