Abstract

This article examines the influence of the anonymous university drama *Caesars Reuenge*, performed by students of Trinity College, Oxford, on Shakespeare's *Julius Caesar*. It argues that *Caesars Reuenge*, likely composed and staged in the early to mid-1590s, predates Shakespeare’s play and shaped not only specific details but also the overall structure and major themes of *Julius Caesar*, particularly its sacrificial and revenge elements. The article situates *Caesars Reuenge* within the academic theatrical tradition of Oxford, highlights verbal and thematic parallels between the two plays, and suggests Shakespeare’s awareness of university drama despite not having attended university himself. It concludes by proposing that Shakespeare’s engagement with academic plays like *Caesars Reuenge* invites a broader reconsideration of the relationship between early modern university drama and the London public theatre.
